Mick Opals – Finding Light Through Stones

Behind every gemstone is a story—but for Mick and Jody of Mick Opals, their journey is one of love, loss, healing, and connection.

What began as a shared passion for opals and sapphires slowly grew into something much deeper. Like many collectors, they were drawn to the beauty and uniqueness of gemstones, spending years appreciating and gathering pieces from across Australia. But life took an unimaginable turn with the loss of their 14-year-old son, Ben, to leukemia.

In the face of such profound grief, Mick and Jody found comfort in the gemstone world. What started as a way to cope and heal became a source of purpose—and eventually, a thriving community.

Mick Opals was born not just as a business, but as a space where people from all walks of life could come together through a shared love of stones. Today, that community spans the globe, connecting collectors, hobbyists, and newcomers alike.

Their collection is a true celebration of Australian opal. From rough and rubs to beautifully polished stones, they offer something for every stage of the journey—whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned cutter. Their range also includes opal jewellery, rare opal shells like belemnites, treated opals, and fascinating fossils including ammonites and even megalodon teeth. And for those who love a little variety, they also bring along a selection of crystals.

One standout piece they’re especially proud of is a stunning high-grade opalised belemnite mined in Coober Pedy—bursting with incredible colour and history.

For Mick and Jody, it’s not just about selling stones—it’s about sharing knowledge, sparking curiosity, and building genuine connections. That’s exactly why they love being part of events like Lismore Gemfest.

“Gemfest brings the whole gemstone community together,” they say. “The atmosphere is always amazing, and you can learn so much just by chatting.”

Whether you’re a collector, a gift shopper, a cutter, or simply curious, Mick Opals welcomes you in.

They also host live auctions twice a week on their Facebook page—every Monday and Saturday at 2pm AEST—where their vibrant community comes together in real time to share the excitement of gemstones.

Mick Opals is more than a business—it’s a reminder that even in life’s hardest moments, beauty, connection, and meaning can still be found.
